In a world where everyone seems to compete for attention on social media, it is easy to feel that you must do the same to succeed as a business owner. Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn are often presented as the only places where visibility matters. However, is that really the only path forward?
For me, there has always been a quiet resistance. A subtle but persistent feeling that being constantly available in a world that never switches off was not sustainable.
My relationship with social media, especially Instagram, has never felt natural. Early on, I noticed how it drained my energy rather than giving anything back. In truth, it is not only Instagram. It is the constant connection, the notifications and the expectation to always be available.
A highly sensitive soul in a digital world
Call me an old soul, but I prefer my laptop to my phone. I need the larger format, the clarity and the calm. As a highly sensitive person, I am very selective about what I let in. Notifications, sounds and moving images feel like small interruptions to my focus. And our phones? They often act like dopamine machines we can never fully step away from.
When I started my business, it felt contradictory to rely on the very platforms that caused me the most stress in order to build something sustainable.

When social media does not feel right, what do you do?
During my first years as a business owner, I still tried. On Instagram, I shared posts and created reels, carousels and stories. At the same time, I followed the rules of engagement and interaction as best I could.
Yet something felt off. I did not enjoy the content I was creating and it felt forced. More importantly, I rarely saw meaningful results. I invested a great deal of time and energy, but what did I actually gain in return?
So in autumn 2024, I made a decision. I was done.
I deleted both Instagram and Facebook from my phone. It was not my first break, but this time felt different. This time, it felt like setting a clear boundary. Not only for how I wanted to live, but also for how I wanted to run my business.
And honestly, I have not regretted it for a single moment.
Creating a digital presence without social media
It may sound provocative, but it is entirely possible to build a strong digital presence without social media. It does, however, require a different approach. One that is long term, intentional and built on value rather than quick clicks.
In my case, this meant focusing more on:
- My website as my digital home. It is available at all times and reflects my brand, expertise and personality.
- SEO and Google, where many small business owners assume only large companies can rank. In reality, it is often more achievable than expected, especially with a clear niche.
- Email newsletters, a direct way to communicate with people who genuinely want to hear from you, without algorithms interfering.
- My blog, like this one, where I can be personal, reflective and educational while building long term visibility.
Digital business does not need to be loud
I do not believe in shouting the loudest to be heard. I believe in clarity, authenticity and longevity. Building a sustainable and meaningful business is entirely possible without being constantly active on social media.
If you recognise that inner resistance, it is okay to choose a different path. It is okay to build your business on your own terms. There are many ways to achieve digital visibility beyond reels and hashtags.
For example, you can:
- Optimise your Google Business Profile for local visibility
- Write blog posts that answer your customers’ questions
- Create a free guide or resource that attracts the right visitors
- Build trust through case studies, testimonials and storytelling

It is not always easy, but it is worth it
Stepping away from major platforms can feel intimidating. However, what you gain is invaluable: focus, time and a deeper connection with what truly matters.
Over time, this choice has led to new collaborations, stronger client relationships and more joy in my work.
If you are wondering, “Can I really be visible online without social media?”
My answer is yes. It takes courage, but it is absolutely possible.
