Create a Google Business Profile: A Simple Guide for Small Business Owners

Create a Google Business Profile. It is one of the simplest ways to strengthen your digital presence, yet many business owners still overlook it.

Google Business Profile previously known as Google My Business is a free tool that helps your business appear in local search results, build trust and drive traffic to your website.

I know it can feel like just another task on your to do list, but this is something I genuinely recommend every business owner to prioritise. Personally, I have received several enquiries and new client contacts through my profile, even though I do not run a physical shop. As a service based business owner, you have just as much to gain from being visible on Google Maps.

What is Google Business Profile?

Google Business Profile is Google’s own platform where you can register and manage your business information. When someone searches for your business name or services in your area, your profile can appear directly in search results or on Google Maps. This includes contact details, opening hours, reviews and links to your website.

It does not matter whether you have a physical office or work entirely online. All business owners can create a profile and increase their local visibility.

Why is it important to register?

By creating a Google Business Profile, you make it easier for new customers to find you both in search results and on the map.

  • You increase your chances of appearing higher in local Google searches.
  • You build trust, especially when you collect reviews from satisfied clients.
  • Your contact details, links and services are easy to access.
  • It is free marketing that also helps drive traffic to your website.

Whether you run a café, offer online coaching or work as a freelancer, this is one of the easiest ways to improve your digital presence.

Create a Google Business Profile – step by step

Creating a Google Business Profile is simpler than you might think. Follow the steps below to get started in just a few minutes.

1. Go to business.google.com

Start by visiting business.google.com and sign in with your Google account. If you do not have one, you can easily create it. This account is needed to manage your business profile.

2. Add your business name

Enter your business name to begin creating a Google Business Profile. If your business is not already listed, select the option to create a new business with that name. Then choose the category that best describes what you offer, such as graphic designer, coach or hairdresser.

3. Add your business location

  • If you have a physical location, enter the address of your shop, clinic or office.
  • If you work digitally or across different locations, choose a service area instead, such as London, Greater Manchester or the whole of the UK.

4. Add contact details

Include your phone number and a link to your website. A phone number is optional, but your website is valuable for driving traffic and conversions.

5. Verify your business

To confirm that your business is legitimate, Google requires verification. This is usually done by sending a code by post, but in some cases verification can happen via email or phone.

6. Optimise your profile

When you create a Google Business Profile, it is important to tailor the content so it reflects your business and services clearly.

  • Add a logo and images that represent your brand.
  • List your services and opening hours.
  • Write a business description using relevant keywords.
  • Share posts, offers and updates.

The more information you add, the greater your chances of standing out.

Why I chose to create a Google Business Profile

When I first registered my business profile, it was mostly a why not decision. I did not have a physical location, only a website, and I worked entirely online. But fairly quickly, I noticed traffic coming from my profile and even new enquiries.

Customers value clarity. Being able to see that a business is verified by Google builds trust, especially at a time when there are many unreliable actors online.

I now see it as a natural part of my digital presence, alongside my website, social media and email marketing.

Summary: Benefits of Creating a Google Business Profile

  • It is free.
  • It only takes a few minutes to get started.
  • It increases your visibility on Google and Google Maps.
  • It builds trust and opens up new business opportunities.
